Best Places to View Cherry Blossoms in Amsterdam

After holding our breath all winter, spring's arrival in Amsterdam feels like a bright sigh of relief. The crisp air softens, buds emerge to fill the naked branches, and cherry blossoms start appearing in gentle whispers across the city's parks, each tree following its own careful timing.

Over the years, I've waited patiently for this quiet spring ritual, returning to the same spots with my camera as the season shifts.

The Japanese have an anciet tradition called hanami—the practice of pausing to appreciate cherry blossoms in their brief, perfect and fleeting bloom. Centered around flower viewing, hanami is reminds us to pause and notice the fleeting beauty around us. It’s a moment to gather with loved ones beneath the trees to share a meal and appreciate the soft petals overhead.

Here are my favorite places to find Amsterdam's cherry blossoms and capture their fleeting beauty.

Discover the breathtaking beauty of Amsterdam's cherry blossoms in springtime

Westerpark
Westerpark's cherry blossoms catch spring's first warm light and are often the first to bloom while other trees remain bare. This park is perfect for golden hour sakura photography, and you'll find a large cluster of camellias nearby as well. Grab a drink and borrel (happy hour snack), Brouwerj Troost, and discover more in my Amsterdam West City Guide.

Museumplein
Although fleeting, the cherry tree rows near the Stedelijk Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Van Gogh Museum create a stunning white and pink canopy they bring unexpected gentleness to this busy tourist area. Don't miss the free Rijksmuseum Gardens too, filled with manicured hedges, colorful flowers, and outdoor art installations. Discover more in my Amsterdam Zuid City Guide.

Amsterdamse Bos – Bloesempark
Cycle 30 minutes south from Amsterdam's center to find Bloesempark, home to 400 cherry blossom trees—the ultimate cherry blossom experience in Amsterdam. This isn't a hidden gem at all, so expect crowds. I suggest to arrive early for morning light or visit during golden hour, and avoid weekends for a more peaceful experience. This park is lovely for an afternoon or evening picnic to tap into the Japanese tradition of hanami. I used my Rolleiflex to photograph the cherry blossoms, check out the video on YouTube.

Vondelpark
My go-to spot for slow breathing and stress relief during morning walks. Vondelpark offers a peaceful haven from the busy city center. The blossoms here often arrive slightly later than other locations, and there's a quiet rose garden to explore as well. View more spring sakura in Vondelpark.

Amsterdam Spring Photography Tips

While spring is considered Amsterdam's "off season," the city's deep cultural connection to flowers (hello, tulip season!) means increasing crowds during blossom time. Arriving early is always recommended.

The most predictable part of Amsterdam's weather is its unpredictability, but seemingly endless grey days are likely if you visit Amsterdam in spring. Over the years, I've been learned to embrace overcast conditions, thick clouds feel relaxing like a weighted blanket. The overcast sky creates soft, even lighting that reduces harsh shadows and is perfect for portrait photography. Vibrant colored flowers pop against grey skies, and when sunlight breaks through, the contrast creates a magical view.
