Photo Journal: Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech
Dreaming in blue and green — Exploring Marrakech’s most iconic garden, where nature meets art and history.
Jardin Majorelle was created by French painter Jacques Majorelle in 1924 and later purchased by Yves Saint Laurent to save this peaceful hideaway from destruction. While others offer flowers, Yves Saint Laurent gifted the Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech—his beloved adopted city.
Often referred to as “the gardener’s garden,” Jardin Majorelle is every bit the tranquil oasis you’d expect, and a must-see when visiting Marrakech. Just prepare to wait in line upon arrival, and brace yourself for the dozens of influencers trying to get the shot.
Heading down a vine-draped walkway, I instantly knew Jardin Majorelle is the kind of place other gardens aspire to be. We visited this living painting during our trip to Marrakech, and even with high expectations and borderline annoying crowds, it still managed to take my breath away.
One of the most beautiful gardens in the world, and yes—it lives up to the hype.
A Botanical Dream in the Heart of Marrakech.
After cooling off in the shaded bamboo forest, the noise melted away, and all I could hear were babbling fountains and birdsong. The garden's plant collection is truly impressive, full of towering palms, bright bougainvillea, floating water lilies, and rows upon rows of succulents and cacti in sculptural shapes and sizes.
There’s also a peaceful courtyard café and a beautifully curated museum of Berber art and culture, housed in what used to be YSL’s former painting studio. Could you imagine having this garden as your daily inspiration? The vivid blues, geometric paths, and dramatic plant life made every moment feel like stepping into a painting!
Crowded… Yet Still Magical
Once you get past the crowds, a mysterious energy starts to take over that transports you from the dusty, chaotic medina into a quiet, lush fantasy of flora and color. Of course, it was busy, and there was a line to take pictures on the staircase. But hey, that’s travel in the Instagram age. After spending some solo time wandering, I eventually met back up with the girls for a quick little photoshoot of our own.
Tip: Walk the opposite direction from the crowds, you’ll find space to breathe and more unique backdrops for portrait photography!
Whether you’re a plant lover, a design enthusiast, or just craving a peaceful escape, Jardin Majorelle is an unforgettable place to visit in Morocco.
