Photo Journal: Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech

Photo Journal: Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech

Jardin Marjorelle was created by painted Jacques Marjorelle in 1924 and later purchased by Yves Saint Laurent in an effort to save this peaceful hideaway from destruction. While other guests offer a bouquet, Yves Saint Laurent gifted the Jardin Majorelle to Marrakesh, his adopted city.

Referred to as 'the gardener's garden,' Jardin Majorelle is every bit the tranquil oasis you'd expect and a must see for visitors to Marrakech. Prepare to wait in line upon arrival and brace yourself to navigate the dozens of influencers trying to 'get the shot.'

Once you get over the fact that you're not alone, mysterious energy transports you from the chaotic, dusty medina into a fantasy of flora and fauna. Yes, it was crowded but, hey, that's traveling in the era of Instagram. I found a way to escape the crowds (spoiler alert, just walk the opposite way) and delightfully set off to explore this serene, botanical dream with my camera in hand.

Heading down the walkway, dripping with hanging vines, it was clear to me that Jardin Majorelle is a garden that other gardens aspire to be.

After cooling off in the bamboo forest, suddenly, all I could hear were gently babbling fountains and bird songs. I soon discovered the extensive plant collection includes lengthy palms, bright bougainvillea, floating water lilies, and plenty of succulents and cacti in all shapes and sizes. The garden also hosts a courtyard cafe and museum about Berber art and culture, housed in YSL’s former painting room. Could you imagine having this garden as daily painting inspiration, wow! After spending time on my own, I eventually caught up with the other girls and for a quick, little photoshoot of our own.

Next door, you can also explore the YSL Museum, I hope to on my next visit!
